Kuwait s new outdoor power supply field

The planned addition of 900 MW will significantly boost the plant's output, contributing to the stability and reliability of Kuwait's power supply. The ministry's decision to expand the Sabiya plant aligns with Kuwait's efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure and ensure a sustainable supply of electricity for its citizens and industries.

Power generation in Kuwait depends primarily on the cogeneration-desalination power plants. There are 6 power plants in Kuwait, namely: Doha East, Doha West, Shuaiba, Al-Zour South, Sabiya, and Shuwaikh as shown on the Kuwait map in figure 1. These power plants employ both thermal steam turbines and gas turbines for power generation.

Electricity generation capacity in Kuwait increases by over 13.2 gigawatts (GW) over the Outlook period, reaching 32 GW in 2035, a 70% increase over capacity in 2018. Combined-cycle plants make up the lion's share of capacity expansions over the projection period, resulting in a more efficient and flexible fleet of power plants compared to today.

If this result is extrapolated and generalized to all stations in Kuwait, which have a total power generation capacity of about 12880 MW, the expected output would be 12880*0.9665=12448 MW. This is the expected power output if they are all operated with full capacity except for forced shut downs due to failures.

This paper has presented a detailed analysis of capacity and availability of electrical power stations in Kuwait. The analysis show that as Kuwait population has increased over the past 34 years by more than 3 times, the demand for power consumption has increased by almost 7 times.

Kuwait, like all oil-producing countries, is facing a changing energy world today. Shifting supply, demand and technology trends have ushered in an energy world where oil-price volatility and market uncertainty are the defining features.
