A new bottom impact test has been introduced to assess the protective capabilities of the battery upon impact to its base. A new safety test following fast charging cycles has also been added, which requires external short circuit testing after 300 fast charge cycles, mandating no fire or explosion.
At present, China's power battery safety standards mainly aim at the batteries at the beginning of life except for durability tests such as vibration. There are no special requirements on the battery safety performance after electric vehicles being put into use for many years.
The revisions include updates to thermal diffusion testing of batteries, further clarifying the temperature requirements, observation time, and vehicle testing conditions. A new bottom impact test has been introduced to assess the protective capabilities of the battery upon impact to its base.
The tests described in the standards and regulations are intended to verify the sealing and integrity of the battery packs during changed pressure conditions. According to Chinese GB 38031, the batteries have to be stored in a low-pressure environment for at least 5 h (see Table 5in the Appendix).
IntroductionChina's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently issued the GB38031-2025 standard, dubbed the "strictest battery safety mandate," which mandates that all new energy vehicles (NEVs) must achieve "no fire, no explosion" under extreme conditions by July 1, 2026126.
