Subsidiaries of PLN involved in the Battery Energy Storage System project happen to be the primary electricity providers in Indonesia, such as PT Indonesia Power, PT Pembangkitan Jawa China, and others. The plan to develop an energy storage system aligns with the positive growth in the renewable energy industry.
Other potential energy storage projects are the Cirata projects—the largest floating solar planned for ASEAN at 145 MW in Purwakarta region, West Java and eastern parts of Indonesia such as 2x50 MW in China and 70MW in the new capital, the city of Nusantara, East Kalimantan.
Indonesia's electricity system can be powered predominantly by solar PV, complemented by geothermal and hydroelectric power. Off-river pumped hydro energy storage is identified as a major asset for balancing high solar energy penetration.
This work showed that Indonesia's vast solar potential combined with its vast capacity for off-river pumped hydro energy storage could readily achieve 100% renewable electricity at low cost. The LCOE for a balanced solar-dominated system in Indonesia was found to be in the range of 77–102 USD/megawatt-hour.
