The presented research actually proposes a novel passive cell balancing system for lithium-ion battery packs. The lithium-ion battery pack is composed of multiple single lithium-ion batteries connected in series. Due to the differences in the cells, when the terminal voltage rises inconsistently when charging in series, some cells will be overcharged and some cells will be undercharged.
The BMS compares the voltage differences between cells to a predefined threshold voltage, if the voltage difference exceeds the predetermined threshold, it initiates cell balancing, cells with lower voltage within the battery pack are charged using energy from cells with higher voltage (Diao et al., 2018).
If you built a lithium-ion battery and its capacity is not what you expect, then you more than likely have a balance issue. While it's true that cells connected in parallel will find their own natural balance, the same is not true for cells wired in series. Battery cells in series have no way of transferring energy between one another.
The Li-ion battery pack is made up of cells that are connected in series and parallel to meet the voltage and power requirements of the EV system. Due to manufacturing irregularity and different operating conditions, each serially connected cell in the battery pack may get unequal voltage or state of charge (SoC).
