As the incessant demand for wireless communication grows, off-grid telecommunication base station sites continue to be introduced around the globe. In rural or remote areas, where power from the grid is unavailable or unreliable, these cell sites require generator sets to provide power security as prime power or backup standby power.
Recognizing this, Mobile Network Operators are actively prioritizing EE for both network maintenance and environmental stewardship in future cellular networks. The paper aims to provide an outline of energy-efficient solutions for base stations of wireless cellular networks.
Certain other tradeoffs such as between EE and system call-level performance or between energy consumption and user throughput needs to be dealt with properly. Therefore, switching off the wireless air interface or keeping femto BSs in the energy-saving mode while retaining QoS is a logical way to minimize energy loss.
