What are the energy storage systems in Mumbai India

Mumbai, 7th April, 2025 – Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company and a trusted electricity provider to approx. 8 lakh residential and commercial consumers, has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to install a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai over the next two years.

However, energy storage has not kept pace with the growth of renewable energy, and India had just 20 MW of battery storage capacity at the end of 2021. Hydro projects, which include pumped hydro, were a much larger figure at 46 GW at the end of March 2022.

India aims to install 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, with renewables expected to supply roughly 50% of total generation. Such variable resources demand flexible buffers. Without the right types of energy storage systems, curtailment rises and project economics suffer.

Yet sunshine fades and wind can stall, leaving utilities scrambling to balance supply and demand. That's where energy storage systems come in—capturing excess electricity when it's plentiful and releasing it when it's scarce. These technologies safeguard reliability, lower costs, and accelerate the nation's march toward a low-carbon future.

The system will have high round-trip efficiency with reduced auxiliary consumption, thereby enhancing operational performance and extending the storage system's lifespan to support Mumbai's energy sustainability goals. As renewable energy adoption accelerates, BESS plays a pivotal role in enabling a smoother transition.

Tata Power said the BESS, equipped with advanced 'black start' functionality, will enable a swift recovery of power supply to critical infrastructure, including the metro, hospitals, Airport, and Data Centers, in case of grid disturbances. This will prevent large-scale blackouts and enhance Mumbai's power network resilience.
