Nordic solar photovoltaic panel purchase costs

During the recent surge in solar PV installations, the Nordic countries – Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark – have increasingly embraced solar PV technology, defying their northern geographical challenges.

In Sweden, solar PV installations have grown exponentially. As of 2023, the country had a total installed solar PV capacity of 4.1 GW. This surge is largely attributed to government initiatives such as investment support schemes, which cover up to 20% of the installation costs for solar PV systems.

Denmark's commitment to integrated energy systems and smart grid technologies further enhances the potential of solar PV, integrating it seamlessly into the national energy mix. In 2023, solar PV provided 9% of the electricity into the Danish grid (Electricity Maps, 2024). In Sweden, solar PV installations have grown exponentially.

The average wholesale electricity price in Sweden stood at roughly 0.031 $/kWh in June 2024. 3 The average household electricity price in Sweden was 0.29 $/kWh in the first half of 2023. Sweden's grid is part of the larger Nordic electricity market, which includes Norway, Finland, Denmark, and the Baltic states.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE, 2024) reported a total installed capacity of around 0.6 GW by the end of 2023. About half of the capacity is installed on households - the rest for industrial and commercial use, with a very limited Utility scale solar.

In 2023, solar PV provided 1% of the electricity into the Swedish grid (Electricity Maps, 2024). Finland's journey in solar energy is characterized by steady progress. The country's installed solar PV capacity reached approximately 1 GW by the end of 2023 and numbers are expected to almost triple by 2030 (Solar Power Europe, 2023).
