Free QuoteHowever, if you want your RV battery/batteries to charge while you're plugged into shore power, your battery system does need to be connected. But it's also possible for a camper to have a converter in it (or one that's wired in a way) that doesn't allow the system to work without a battery connected.
Some converters can work without one in the system (they separately supply 12V DC to the RV's electrical system). However, if you want your RV battery/batteries to charge while you're plugged into shore power, your battery system does need to be connected.
Depending on the inverter, they can be used for different DC voltages like 12V, 24V, or even 48V. We've established that an RV battery inverter changes the 12 volt DC power from your RV batteries to 120 volt AC power. By contrast, an RV converter “converts” the voltage from 120 volt AC power to 12 volt DC power.
So, your RV converter is needed to recharge your batteries when you're plugged into shore power, and also to power all of the DC components of your RV. For more in-depth information, see our post on RV power converters. Is My RV Battery Required to Run the 12V System When My RV is Plugged In?
Except for the simplest needs, adding an inverter may require changes to your RV's electrical system. This is especially true if you want to power multiple outlets or high-wattage appliances. In most cases, it's not what you would call a “plug 'n play” upgrade. How Does An RV Inverter Work?
No RV should not be left on all the time. An RV Inverter can be easily shut down when plugged into shore power. It is because there is no need to convert 12V direct current into 120v alternating current as you are already getting 120VAC power from the power grid when plugged in so the RV inverter is unnecessary.
