Wind turbine control systems continue to play important roles for ensuring wind turbine reliable and safe operation and to optimize wind energy capture. The main control systems in a modern wind turbine include pitch control, stall control (passive and active), yaw control, and others.
You can control a turbine by controlling the generator speed, blade angle adjustment, and rotation of the entire wind turbine. Blade angle adjustment and turbine rotation are also known as pitch and yaw control, respectively. A visual representation of pitch and yaw adjustment is shown in Figures 5 and 6. BLADEcontrol® is the pioneer in rotor blade monitoring. The well-known condition monitoring system increases turbine availability, reduces downtimes, and ensures optimum efficiency.
The pitch angle of the blades is controlled by hydraulic actuators, which are normally powered by hydraulic pumps. Figure 2 shows hydraulic pitch control system. The system may include sensors to measure wind conditions and a controller to analyse the data and adjust the blade pitch accordingly. Fig. 2.
In order to maximize the wind power output and minimize the asymmetric loads acting on the rotor blades and the tower, a horizontal-axis wind turbine must be oriented with rotor against the wind by using an active yaw control system. Like wind pitch systems, yaw systems can be driven either electrically or hydraulically.
