About half of Sudan's electricity comes from burning fuel and half from hydropower. This year the government reduced subsidies for higher energy consumption levels as part of economic reforms monitored by the International Monetary Fund.

The residential sector constitutes 60% of the electricity consumption in Sudan and therefore is the largest user segment. Energy in Sudan describes energy and electricity production, consumption and imports in Sudan. The chief sources of energy in 2010 were wood and charcoal, hydroelectric power, and oil. Sudan is a net energy exporter. Primary energy use in Sudan was 179 TWh and 4 TWh per million persons in 2008.

Further, Sudan's energy sector is currently subsidised by the government. Government subsidies to the sector totalled $667 million in 2019. This represents 13.5% of total government expenditures . Financial sustainability could be achieved by introducing gradual tariff adjustments.

In 2020, the sector recovered less than 20 percent of operational costs. Household electricity consumption in Sudan is among the highest levels in the world. The low price of electricity, combined with the hot climate and inefficiency of appliances, Sudan's level of electricity consumption is very high compared to its regional peers.
