Some plants, such as nuclear, wind and solar power, have virtually zero variable costs: once they are built, they produce electricity virtually for free. This is in stark contrast to fossil fuel-based power plants.
These expenses may include water consumption, waste and wastewater discharge, chemicals such as selective catalytic reduction ammonia, and consumables including lubricants and calibration gas. Because these costs are generation dependent, the values are levelized by the cost per unit of energy generation and presented in $/MWh.
Facilitated by continual improvement of battery efficiency and innovation of development models in PV industry, the costs of PV generation have been continuously decreasing and demonstrated considerable commercial competitiveness . In especial, the costs of silicon batteries and PV modules have been reduced by more than 70 % during 2013∼2020.
By integrating grid costs and balancing costs into conventional LCOE framework, a System LCOE (S-LCOE) model was constructed to evaluate the economic feasibility of PV generation, more accurately. The results revealed that all provincial S-LCOE of China's PV is currently higher than local desulfurized coal electricity price (DCEP).
The LCOE for a new nuclear power plant built in 2024 is estimated to range between 13.6 and 49.0 €cents/kWh. This result must be viewed in the context that significant so-cietal costs, such as waste disposal, are externalized and not included in the cost calculation.
The levelised cost of a generation technology is the ratio of the total costs of a generic plant to the total amount of electricity expected to be generated over the plant's lifetime. Both are expressed in net present value terms. This means that future costs and outputs are discounted, when compared to costs and outputs today.
