Hence, reducing the production cost of green hydrogen will be vital, achieved through adopting lower-priced solar PV systems and improving the efficiency of electrolysis technology.
Considering the Wawasan Brunei 2035 (Ministry of Energy, 2014) renewable energy target of 954,000 MWh by 2035, which corresponds to around 600 MWe (calculated using capacity factor of 0.17, the Asian average), the remaining solar power potential that could be used to produce green hydrogen would be around 3,000 MW.
Hydrogen produced in Brunei's hydrogenation plant is shipped more than 4,000km inside containerised tanks to a dehydrogenation plant in the Japanese City of Kawasaki, where H2 is extracted. The project will run by the end of the fiscal year of 2020.
It means that Brunei Darussalam will be a hydrogen production country and will use some portion of the hydrogen to be produced domestically for its internal use, such as road transport sector and power generation.
To achieve this goal, Brunei must transition from oil and gas to clean fuels, such as hydrogen, for both production and export. Producing green hydrogen will require harnessing renewable energies, but Brunei's solar Photo Voltaic (PV) potential is limited due to its land area constraints.
In terms of volume, if hydrogen cofiring at the gas-fired power plants has 60% efficiency, then Brunei will need around 20 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) by 2030 in both scenarios. By 2050, the needed hydrogen will be around 230 ktpa in the BAU Scenario and around 200 ktpa per year in the APS. Figure 4.1.
