Free QuoteEmergency power generators are an integral component in many fire and life safety systems. For this reason, NFPA 110, Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems, is referenced by many of the most widely used codes and standards. NFPA 110 addresses performance requirements for emergency and standby power systems.
Station service power requirements for combustion turbine and internal combustion engine generating plants are such that 208 or 480 volts will be used. 1.1.4 DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM. The primary distribution system with central in-house generation should be selected in accordance with the owner's requirements. 1.2.1 GENERAL.
The key to understanding the requirements outlined in NFPA 110 lies in acquainting yourself with the way emergency power supply systems (EPSS) are classified: By Level, Class and Type. Dictates performance standards your system needs to follow. Duration your system must be able to run without refueling.
These requirements include such things as where generators can be installed, nameplate markings, conductor ampacity, and disconnecting means. Generators are basically motors that operate in reverse—they produce electricity when rotated, instead of rotating when supplied with elec-tricity.
These types of loads would be served by optional standby generators, which aren't defined in NFPA 110 because they aren't essential to life safety. Facility managers looking for compliance guidance for a necessary (but not legally required) unit should turn to NFPA 70, more commonly referred to as the National Electrical Code®.
Generators for a power plant serving an installation will be in the range from 4160 volts to 13.8 kV to suit the size of the unit and primary distribution system voltage. Generators in this size range will be offered by the manufacturer in accordance with its design, and it would be difficult and expensive to get a different voltage rating.
