North Korea s 5G communication base station

In the report, South Korea ranked first among 29 countries, including non-OECD members such as China and the European Union, in “5G base station deployment.” The country recorded 593 5G base stations per 100,000 inhabitants, significantly surpassing Lithuania (328) and Finland (251).

North Korea could finally be getting a long-overdue upgrade to its 3G cellular network. A report says the country has begun importing used 4G networking equipment from Huawei and will launch the new network in major cities. Huawei supplied the current 3G network.

While the dispute continued, the government set up a rival cellular network to draw customers away, Orascom alleges. Soon, the second network, called Kangsong, was up and running, and North Korea had two 3G networks. Jump forward a decade, and it appears that mobile phones are deeply integrated in today's North Korea.

South Korea's main telecom firms developed their public 5G networks on the 3.5-gigahertz band, a mid-frequency band. At the same time, 5G can be enabled on the high-frequency bands supporting millimeter wave, the type touted at 5G's inception that can provide more-extreme boosts in speed.

South Korea is often viewed as a bellwether for the 5G business, largely because the country was first in widescale 5G deployment and its regulator collects detailed information about the adoption of the technology.

Four years ago, South Korea led the world's biggest rollout of 5G, promising a huge increase in network speeds that would help usher in a flurry of new technologies such as autonomous cars, augmented reality and remote surgeries. South Koreans are still waiting for that to happen.
