(Xinhua) The number of 5G base stations in China had risen to more than 3.5 million by the end of February 2024, latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) showed.
The construction of base stations in China has continued to grow rapidly since 2019. From 2021 to 2030, cumulative carbon emissions during the operational phase will be 710±50 MtCO2 e, and cumulative carbon emissions during the manufacturing phase will be 102±5 MtCO 2 e, accounting for 87% and 13%, respectively.
2.6. Scenario analysis 5G base stations are high-frequency with an average coverage of about 450 m, while the 4G base stations cover an average range of about 1500 m. Taking a 64T64R S111 5G macro station equipment as an example, the power consumption was ca. 3–4 kW, 2–3 times higher than that of 4G equipment (Li, 2019).
Currently, limited research (Tala't et al., 2017) is focused on improving the power supply mode of base stations, such as replacing traditional thermal power generation with renewable energy (photovoltaic systems, wind power) and equipping micro base stations with solar cells.
China Tower planned to build or retrofit about 2 million 5G sites between 2019 and 2022. An estimated 800,000 of these sites will adopt Huawei's 5G Power solution, eliminating 900 million kg in carbon emissions every year, helping to realize targets for green power grids for the 5G era.
