Photovoltaic panels. Source: Amaury Pérez Sánchez So far in Cuba, 227 MW have been installed in photovoltaic systems connected to the electricity system, of which 215 MW in 72 farms synchronized with the Electric System and 12 MW installed on roofs and areas belonging to the entities.

Cuba began the construction of 59 photovoltaic solar parks with the idea of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and creating other wastelands in which clean energy is the main resource for electricity consumption. Of these 59 solar parks, it is expected that: 33 are completed within the current year, synchronizing with the national energy system.

Also included in the project works is the construction of two solar photovoltaic power plants in Las Tunas Province in Cuba's eastern region, where flat, unshaded terrain affords an optimal environment for harnessing solar energy.

The solar panels are suitable for both for domestic and com systems and for distribution throughout the country. It's a win-win situation.” The output will increase coverage to some 130,000 people. In order to encourage the transition to solar energy, the Cuban government is heavily subsidizing the cost of the PV panels and solar heaters.

Cuba is betting on renewable energy, building 92 solar parks by 2028 and moving towards sustainable and clean energy independence.
