A battery energy storage system (BESS) is an electrochemical device that charges (or collects energy) from the grid or a power plant and then discharges that energy at a later time to provide electricity or other grid services when needed.
Formula: Capacity (Ah)=Power (W)×Backup Hours (h)/Battery Voltage (V) Example: If a base station consumes 500W and needs 4 hours of backup at 48V, the required capacity is: 500W×4h/48V=41.67Ah Choosing a battery with a slightly higher capacity ensures reliability under real-world conditions.
In practice, the battery groups (either traditional lead-acid batteries or emerging lithium ones) are deployed as the backup power supply of BSs. In our scenario, one battery group could be shared by multiple BSs nearby to exploit the statistical multiplexing gain, and the multiple BSs sharing the same battery group form a virtual cell (VC).
For example, a battery with 1 MW of power capacity and 4 MWh of usable energy capacity will have a storage duration of four hours. Cycle life/lifetime is the amount of time or cycles a battery storage system can provide regular charging and discharging before failure or significant degradation.
One example is the Hornsdale Power Reserve, a 100 MW/129 MWh lithium-ion battery installation, the largest lithium-ion BESS in the world, which has been in operation in South Australia since December 2017. The Hornsdale Power Reserve provides two distinct services: 1) energy arbitrage; and 2) contingency spinning reserve.
