A cash flow analysis showed that the GSR concept achieved an attractive levelized cost of ammonia (LCOA) of 332.1 €/ton relative to 385.1–385.9 €/ton for the conventional plants at European energy prices (6.5 €/GJ natural gas and 60 €/MWh electricity).
For this to be viable, an ammonia-based energy storage system must display “High round-trip efficiency, low cost and considerable flexibility.” Maximizing efficiency – or minimizing the losses from converting power to ammonia and then back to power – is the major advancement revealed by the German paper.
The cost for liquid ammonia storage is US$53/tonne, which is the average of US$10.6 - $95.3/tonne for 15- to 182-day storage durations (Bartels, 2008).
Yet the ammonia export is expected to expand, as it can be used to distribute hydrogen effectively. The rest of the ammonia is used for energy storage. Applications of ammonia for industrial purposes other than fertilizers, such as refrigerant and diesel exhaust fluid, were not considered in this study.
Due to the low cost of storing and transporting ammonia, green ammonia can be available as an energy source in all geographies, without the geological storage requirements of carbon capture and storage (CCS) or underground hydrogen storage.
The cost of the ammonia power plant is not considered in this study, as it is assumed that the ammonia production and storage facilities are located near an existing power plant which can use ammonia as a fuel or blend ammonia into fuel mixtures (Erdemir and Dincer, 2021).
