During the early weeks of the invasion, Russia has prioritized efforts to seize control of major energy infrastructure. When stuff breaks in the power grid, the whole system has to absorb the shock and rebalance.
A paid subscription is required for full access. Ukraine had a total installed electricity capacity of nearly 58.2 gigawatts in 2022. Thermal power plants burning fossil fuels had the highest capacity in the country, measured at approximately 28.7 gigawatts.
The majority of Ukraine's energy comes from fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Analysis of GlobalData figures reveal that in 2021, nuclear energy generated more than half (54.2%) of the country's electricity. Only 1.6% of power plants are fuelled by nuclear energy in Ukraine but together they have an average energy capacity of 902.9MW.

Another power supplier, Yasno, says Ukrainians are likely to face power cuts until March. Already, some six million people have been left without electricity, according to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. To clarify, this means millions are without adequate heating, just as temperatures fall below zero in many parts of Ukraine.
