Free QuoteOverall, wind and solar power outputs in various provinces of China exhibit strong temporal complementarity. Although there is no negative correlation in Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan, wind-solar power joint output can smooth the fluctuations of solar or wind power outputs.
The results reveal that wind energy and solar energy resources in China undergo large interannual fluctuations and show significant spatial heterogeneity. At the same time, according to the complementarity of wind and solar resources, over half of China's regions are suitable for the complementary development of resources.
Author to whom correspondence should be addressed. In the quest to scientifically develop power systems increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources, the potential and temporal complementarity of wind and solar power in China's northwestern provinces necessitated a systematic assessment.
The complementarity between wind and solar power generation is defined by the synergistic capacity of both sources to enhance electricity outputs and augment their reliability . Several indices have been introduced to assess the complementarity of wind and solar power generation across diverse temporal scales.
Wind and solar energy are expected to become the main sources of electricity supply in China, which requires addressing the balance problem between intermittent generation and random fluctuating loads and overcoming the seasonal and spatial distribution differences between wind and solar resources and electricity demand.
The wind and solar complementarity in China is lower in the east and higher in the west. On an hourly scale, the complementary shows a downward trend, especially in central and eastern China. The peak-valley difference and fluctuation of net load demand will increase in China particularly under SSP5-8.5.
